Advanced Genitive Prepositions (Formal Register)Zaawansowane przyimki z dopełniaczem (rejestr formalny)

You already know während, trotz, and wegen as genitive prepositions. Formal, official, and academic German draws on a much larger set of them — words that rarely appear in casual conversation but are everywhere in contracts, laws, official letters, and news reporting. Recognizing them (and getting their genitive endings right) is a clear marker of advanced, literate German.

The inventory

PrepositionMeaningExample
aufgrund due to, on the basis of aufgrund des schlechten Wetters
infolge as a result of infolge des Unfalls
mangels for lack of mangels ausreichender Beweise
vorbehaltlich subject to, pending vorbehaltlich der Zustimmung
anlässlich on the occasion of anlässlich seines Geburtstags
hinsichtlich with regard to hinsichtlich der neuen Vorschriften
bezüglich regarding, concerning bezüglich Ihrer Anfrage
zwecks for the purpose of zwecks besserer Übersicht
mittels by means of mittels eines Werkzeugs

Several of these (mangels, zwecks) are often used without an article at all, especially before an adjective + plural or uncountable noun — in that case the adjective itself takes the strong genitive ending (mangels ausreichender Beweise) that an article would otherwise carry.

The genitive-to-dative drift

Here’s the nuance that actually marks fluency: a handful of common genitive prepositions — especially trotz, wegen, and während — are drifting toward the dative in everyday spoken German, even though careful written style still expects the genitive.

This drift is essentially limited to the small set of genitive prepositions that were already common in speech centuries ago. The formal inventory above — aufgrund, infolge, mangels, vorbehaltlich, anlässlich, hinsichtlich, bezüglich, zwecks, mittels — belongs almost exclusively to writing and essentially never takes the dative; using one of these at all already signals a formal register, so the genitive that comes with it isn’t going anywhere.

Common mistakes

📌

Beyond the core nine: angesichts (in view of), innerhalb/ausserhalb (within/outside), unweit (not far from), kraft (by virtue of), and laut (according to) round out the formal-register genitive set — they behave exactly like the inventory above.

Zestaw

PrzyimekZnaczeniePrzykład
aufgrund z powodu, na podstawie aufgrund des schlechten Wetters
infolge na skutek, w wyniku infolge des Unfalls
mangels z braku mangels ausreichender Beweise
vorbehaltlich z zastrzeżeniem, pod warunkiem vorbehaltlich der Zustimmung
anlässlich z okazji anlässlich seines Geburtstags
hinsichtlich w odniesieniu do hinsichtlich der neuen Vorschriften
bezüglich odnośnie do, w sprawie bezüglich Ihrer Anfrage
