Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-09. Applies to both the website and the iOS app.
What this is
Deutsch Kompass is a personal German-learning project (website + companion iOS app) run by a single developer, not a company. This page explains what data the site/app collects, why, and how you can have it removed.
Account data
Creating an account collects your name and email address, and (if you choose email/password sign-in) a hashed password — never stored in plain text. If you sign in with Google or Apple instead, we receive only the name/email those providers share, never your Google/Apple password. This data is used solely to run your account: signing you in, syncing your progress across devices, and — if you opt into two-factor authentication or a passkey — securing your sign-in.
Learning progress
Exercise scores and spaced-repetition review state are stored against your account so your progress follows you between the website and the iOS app. This data is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used for anything beyond showing your own progress back to you.
Voice-recorded content suggestions (iOS app)
The iOS app's "suggest a phrase" feature transcribes your recording on your device and discards the audio immediately after — the audio itself is never uploaded or stored anywhere. Only the resulting text (plus any meaning/context you optionally add) is sent to the server, where it's reviewed by the site's one administrator before anything is ever added to the app's public content.
What we don't do
- No ad networks, no ad tracking, no analytics SDKs that profile you across other apps or sites.
- No selling or sharing data with third parties for marketing.
- No third-party crash/analytics reporting in the iOS app — error logs stay on-device (Apple's OSLog), never transmitted anywhere.
Third parties involved in running this service
- Cloudflare — hosts the website, API, and database.
- Resend — sends transactional email (email verification, password reset, security notifications). Never marketing email.
- Cloudflare Turnstile — a CAPTCHA-like check on sign-up/sign-in to reduce automated abuse; it does not track you across other sites.
- Google / Apple — only if you choose to sign in with one of them, per their own privacy policies for that sign-in.
Deleting your data
Both the website (Account » Delete account) and the iOS app (Account » Delete account) let you permanently delete your account yourself, at any time, with no need to contact anyone. This removes your account, progress, and review history immediately. If you'd rather email a request instead, use the contact below.
