Dative CaseCelownik
I give the man the book.
Daję mężczyźnie książkę.
The Dativ marks the indirect object — the person something is given to, done for, or that otherwise receives the benefit (or cost) of an action. It answers the question wem? (“to/for whom?”).
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch.
(I give the man the book. — dem Mann is the indirect object: who receives it.)
The definite article: der / die / das
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | der | die | das | die |
| Akkusativ | den | die | das | die |
| Dativ | dem | der | dem | den |
Notice the Dativ is the one case where every gender changes — and the plural noun itself usually adds an -n too, if it doesn’t already end in one: die Kinder → den Kindern.
The indefinite article: ein / eine / ein
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | ein | eine | ein |
| Akkusativ | einen | eine | ein |
| Dativ | einem | einer | einem |
Personal pronouns in the Dativ
| Nominativ | Dativ |
|---|---|
| ich | mir |
| du | dir |
| er | ihm |
| sie (she) | ihr |
| es | ihm |
| wir | uns |
| ihr | euch |
| sie (they) | ihnen |
Verbs that always take the Dativ
This is the biggest trap for English speakers: a handful of very common verbs take a Dativ object even though English treats their object as a plain direct object. Learn these as a set:
helfen (to help), danken (to thank), gefallen (to please/like), gehören (to belong to), glauben (to believe — when the object is a person), folgen (to follow), antworten (to answer), gratulieren (to congratulate).
Ich helfe dir. (I help you — not "dich"!)
Das gefällt mir. (I like that — literally "that is pleasing to me".)
Prepositions that always take the Dativ
aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu — a classic list worth memorizing as a chunk (many learners use the mnemonic sentence “Aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu — Dativ, wie du.”).
Ich komme aus der Schweiz.
Wir fahren mit dem Bus.
Dativ oznacza dopełnienie dalsze — osobę, której coś się daje, dla której coś się robi, albo która w inny sposób odnosi korzyść (lub koszt) z jakiejś czynności. Odpowiada na pytanie wem? (“komu/dla kogo?”).
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch.
(Daję mężczyźnie książkę. — dem Mann to dopełnienie dalsze: kto to otrzymuje.)
Rodzajnik określony: der / die / das
| Przypadek | Rodzaj męski | Rodzaj żeński | Rodzaj nijaki | Liczba mnoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|
