Complex ConnectorsZłożone spójniki

und, aber, oder, and weil get you through A2 and B1. From B2 onward, precise writing calls for connectors that spell out exactly how two ideas relate — contrast, result, method, or a pair of options — instead of leaving it to context.

The trap: obwohl vs. trotzdem

These two both translate as “although / nevertheless”, and mixing them up is one of the most common B2+ mistakes — because they belong to two different grammatical categories that happen to mean similar things.

Word typeEffect on word orderExample
obwohl subordinating conjunction sends the verb to the end of its own clause Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
trotzdem adverb occupies position one; verb stays in position two Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.

A quick test: can the word stand at the start of its own complete sentence, with the verb right after it? If yes, it's an adverb like trotzdem. If it needs a second clause glued onto it with the verb pushed to the end, it's a subordinating conjunction like obwohl.

Subordinating connectors that send the verb to the end

ConnectorMeaningExample
obwohl / obgleichalthoughObwohl er müde war, arbeitete er weiter.
währendwhile / whereasWährend ich arbeite, sieht sie fern.
sodassso that (result)Sie übt viel, sodass sie besser wird.
indemby (doing something)Er lernt, indem er viel liest.
wohingegenwhereas (contrast)Er mag Kaffee, wohingegen sie Tee bevorzugt.

Correlative pairs (two-part connectors)

These come in matched pairs, with each half sitting in front of the item it connects:

PairMeaningExample
sowohl...als auchboth...andIch spreche sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
weder...nochneither...norSie spricht weder Französisch noch Italienisch.
entweder...odereither...orEntweder kommt er heute, oder er kommt morgen.
nicht nur...sondern auchnot only...but alsoEr ist nicht nur klug, sondern auch fleissig.
je...destothe...the (more/less)Je mehr er übt, desto besser wird er.

je...desto is the odd one out structurally: the je-clause sends its verb to the end (like a subordinating conjunction), while the desto-clause inverts subject and verb around desto, the way any fronted element triggers inversion.

Common mistakes

Występują w dopasowanych parach, a każda połowa stoi przed elementem, który łączy:
