Extended Participle ConstructionsRozszerzone imiesłowowe równoważniki zdań
German has a compact way of packing an entire relative clause into a single phrase that sits before the noun, ending in a normal adjective ending. It shows up constantly in newspapers, academic writing, and official documents — rarely in casual speech, where the equivalent relative clause feels more natural.
der Brief, der gestern geschrieben wurde (relative clause — spoken-friendly)
der gestern geschriebene Brief (extended participle — written German)
Two participles, two meanings
| Form | Built from | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partizip I | infinitive + -d | ongoing / active, like an "-ing" adjective | das schlafende Kind the sleeping child |
| Partizip II | the normal past participle | completed / passive, "already done to it" | der geschriebene Brief the (already) written letter |
Whichever participle you use, it takes a normal adjective ending (-e, -en, -es…) depending on case, gender, and the article in front of it — see Adjective Endings if that part isn't automatic yet.
Building the “extended” part
What makes the construction extended is that the participle can drag its own modifiers — an adverb, a time expression, even a whole von + Dativ phrase — in between the article and itself, all packed into one noun phrase:
der gestern von meinem Vater geschriebene Brief
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
art modifier modifier participle noun
(adjective ending)
| Extended participle construction | Equivalent relative clause |
|---|---|
| die schnell wachsende Firma | die Firma, die schnell wächst |
| die vom Team gelösten Probleme | die Probleme, die vom Team gelöst wurden |
The two columns above mean exactly the same thing. When you’re reading — news articles, contracts, academic papers — it helps to mentally unpack the left column into the right column: find the noun at the end, then read the participle right before it as if it started its own “der/die/das … “ clause.
Common mistakes
- der gestern schreibende Briefder gestern geschriebene Brief — a letter doesn't write itself; a completed action on the noun needs Partizip II, not Partizip I.
- das schlafend Kinddas schlafende Kind — the participle still needs a normal adjective ending, exactly like any other adjective before a noun.
- der Brief gestern geschriebeneder gestern geschriebene Brief — the whole participle phrase, modifiers included, goes before the noun, not after it.
Niemiecki ma zwarty sposób na spakowanie całego zdania względnego w jedną frazę, która stoi przed rzeczownikiem, kończąc się zwykłą końcówką przymiotnikową. Pojawia się to bez przerwy w gazetach, tekstach naukowych i dokumentach urzędowych — rzadko w mowie potocznej, gdzie równoważne zdanie względne brzmi naturalniej.
der Brief, der gestern geschrieben wurde (zdanie względne — przyjazne mowie)
der gestern geschriebene Brief (rozszerzony imiesłów — niemiecki pisany)
Dwa imiesłowy, dwa znaczenia
| Forma | Zbudowana z | Znaczenie | Przykład |
|---|---|---|---|
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
rodz. określenie określenie imiesłów rzeczownik
(końcówka przymiotnikowa)
| Rozszerzona konstrukcja imiesłowowa | Równoważne zdanie względne |
|---|---|
