Passive Voice (Präsens)Strona bierna (Präsens)
Active sentences focus on who does something; passive sentences shift the focus onto what happens to something, and the doer becomes optional.
Aktiv: Der Mechaniker repariert das Auto. (The mechanic repairs the car.)
Passiv: Das Auto wird repariert. (The car is being repaired.)
Notice what happened to das Auto: it was the Akkusativ object in the active sentence, and it becomes the Nominativ subject of the passive one.
Formation
werden (conjugated in the present tense) + Partizip II (at the end of the clause):
| werden | |
|---|---|
| ich | werde |
| du | wirst |
| er/sie/es | wird |
| wir | werden |
| ihr | werdet |
| sie/Sie | werden |
Die Fenster werden geputzt.
(The windows are being cleaned.)
Naming the doer: von + Dativ
If you want to say who is doing the action, add it with von + Dativ — but it’s entirely optional, and very often left out:
Das Haus wird von einer Firma gebaut.
(The house is being built by a company.)
The impersonal passive
German can build a passive sentence with no subject at all, often used for general rules, instructions, or descriptions of what “people” do:
Hier wird nicht geraucht.
(No smoking here — literally "here is not smoked".)
This sounds strange word-for-word in English, but it’s completely natural and common in German — you’ll see it constantly on signs and in instructions.
