Verb + Preposition Combinations (Präpositionalverben)Czasowniki z utrwalonym przyimkiem (Präpositionalverben)

Plenty of German verbs come glued to one specific preposition — and that preposition rarely matches the one English would use. You can’t translate your way to it; you have to learn the pair as a single unit: warten auf (not “warten für”), sich interessieren für (not “sich interessieren an”), denken an (not “denken über”).

Common Präpositionalverben

Verb + prepositionCaseMeaningExample
denken anAkkthink aboutIch denke an dich.

The preposition is fixed to the verb, not to a meaning — sich freuen auf and sich freuen über both mean roughly "be happy about," but auf is for something still ahead (anticipation) and über is for something that already happened.

Asking about it: wo(r)- for things, preposition + wen/wem for people

To ask “what… about?”, German fuses wo with the preposition — inserting an r whenever the preposition starts with a vowel, purely to avoid two vowels colliding. To ask about a person instead, the wo(r)- form is never used — the preposition simply pairs with wen (Akkusativ) or wem (Dativ).

PrepositionAsking about a thingAsking about a person
aufworaufauf wen
anworanan wen
fürwofürfür wen
vonwovonvon wem
vorwovorvor wem
überworüberüber wen
umworumum wen

Answering back: da(r)- for things, preposition + pronoun for people

The same split applies when you refer back to something already mentioned instead of naming it again: a thing gets a da(r)- compound, a person gets the preposition plus a normal personal pronoun.

PrepositionReferring back to a thingReferring back to a person
aufdaraufauf ihn / auf sie
andaranan ihn / an sie
fürdafürfür ihn / für sie
vondavonvon ihm / von ihr
vordavorvor ihm / vor ihr

"Ich freue mich darauf" (I'm looking forward to it) — never "Ich freue mich auf es." Prepositions never combine directly with es for a thing; that's exactly the job of the da(r)- compound.

💡

Learn the case with the pair, not just the preposition. Knowing “warten auf” isn’t enough — auf can take Akkusativ or Dativ depending on context elsewhere in German, but with warten it’s always Akkusativ. Memorize each Präpositionalverb as a three-part unit: verb + preposition + case, the way the reference table above lists them. That’s also why an(Dat) can mean something different from an(Akk) across different verbs — the verb decides, not the preposition alone.

Common mistakes

denken anAkkmyśleć oIch denke an dich.

aufworaufauf wen
anworanan wen
fürwofürfür wen
vonwovonvon wem
vorwovorvor wem
überworüberüber wen
umworumum wen

Odpowiadanie: da(r)- dla rzeczy, przyimek + zaimek dla osób

Ta sama zasada dotyczy odwoływania się do czegoś, co zostało już wspomniane, zamiast nazywania tego ponownie: rzecz dostaje formę da(r)-, osoba — przyimek plus zwykły zaimek osobowy.

PrzyimekOdniesienie do rzeczyOdniesienie do osoby
