Relative ClausesZdania względne

A relative clause hangs extra information off a noun, without starting a whole new sentence:

Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Vater.
(The man who is standing there is my father.)

Where the pronoun’s form comes from

This is the one thing to really internalize: a relative pronoun’s gender and number agree with the noun it refers back to (its antecedent), but its case is decided entirely by the job it does inside the relative clause — completely independent of whatever case the antecedent had in the main clause.

Der Mann, den ich kenne, ist nett.

der Mann is Nominativ out in the main clause, but inside the relative clause, “the man” is what ich kenne — a direct object — so the pronoun switches to den, Akkusativ.

The relative pronoun table

Identical to the definite article, except for two spots:

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativderdiedasdie
Akkusativdendiedasdie
Dativdemderdemdenen
Genitivdessenderendessenderen

dessen/deren translate “whose” — the pronoun’s gender matches the owner, not the thing owned:

Das ist das Haus, dessen Garten sehr gross ist.
(dessen is neuter because das Haus is neuter — even though Garten,
the thing being owned, is masculine.)

Word order: verb to the end

A relative clause is a subordinate clause, so it follows the same rule as weil, dass, and als clauses: the conjugated verb (or verb cluster) goes all the way to the end, and the whole clause is set off by commas:

Die Frau, der ich geholfen habe, ist Ärztin.

Zdanie względne doczepia dodatkową informację do rzeczownika, bez zaczynania zupełnie nowego zdania:

Nominativderdiedasdie
Akkusativdendiedasdie
Dativdemderdemdenen
Genitivdessenderendessenderen

dessen/deren znaczą “czyj” — rodzaj zaimka pasuje do posiadacza, nie do rzeczy posiadanej:
