Imperative (Imperativ)Tryb rozkazujący (Imperativ)
The Imperativ is used for commands, instructions, and requests. Unlike every other tense on this site, it isn’t built around six persons — you only ever give a command to someone you’re addressing directly, so German has just three forms, one for each way of saying “you”.
machen (to make / to do) — all three command forms
du-form
Take the present-tense du-form, drop the -st ending, and drop the pronoun. This is the one form where stem changes matter, and they behave differently depending on the type:
| Stem change | du (present) | Imperativ | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| e → i (sprechen) | du sprichst | Sprich! | change carries over |
| e → ie (lesen) | du liest | Lies! | change carries over |
| a → ä (fahren) | du fährst | Fahr! (not "Fähr!") | change does not carry over |
A handful of strong e→i verbs shorten even further and drop the final -e entirely: essen → Iss!, geben → Gib!, nehmen → Nimm!
ihr-form
The easy one — it’s identical to the ordinary present-tense ihr form, just without the pronoun:
machen → ihr macht → Macht!
sprechen → ihr sprecht → Sprecht!
Sie-form (formal)
Built like a question with the words flipped: infinitive + Sie, verb first:
machen → Machen Sie!
nehmen → Nehmen Sie!
Irregulars to remember
sein is irregular in all three forms — it doesn’t follow any of the
patterns above:
| du | ihr | Sie |
|---|---|---|
| Sei! | Seid! | Seien Sie! |
Common mistakes
- Fähr nicht so schnell!Fahr nicht so schnell! — a→ä stem changes disappear in the du-imperative, even though they're present in the ordinary du-form.
- Sein Sie vorsichtig!Seien Sie vorsichtig! — sein's Sie-imperative is irregular; it isn't the bare infinitive + Sie like other verbs.
- Du hilf mir!Hilf mir! — the pronoun is always dropped in the du- and ihr-imperative; only the Sie-form keeps its pronoun.
Imperativ służy do wydawania poleceń, instrukcji i próśb. W przeciwieństwie do każdego innego czasu na tej stronie, nie opiera się na sześciu osobach — polecenie zawsze wydajesz komuś, do kogo zwracasz się bezpośrednio, więc niemiecki ma tylko trzy formy, po jednej na każdy sposób mówienia “ty/wy/Pan/Pani”.
machen (robić) — wszystkie trzy formy rozkazujące
Forma du
Weź formę du w czasie teraźniejszym, odrzuć końcówkę -st i odrzuć zaimek. To jedyna forma, w której liczą się zmiany tematu, a zachowują się one różnie w zależności od typu:
| Zmiana tematu | du (teraźniejszy) | Imperativ | Reguła |
|---|---|---|---|
| e → i (sprechen) | du sprichst | Sprich! | zmiana zostaje |
| e → ie (lesen) | du liest | Lies! | zmiana zostaje |
machen → Machen Sie!
nehmen → Nehmen Sie!
Nieregularności do zapamiętania
