Present Tense (Präsens)Czas teraźniejszy (Präsens)

German has only one present tense — there’s no separate “simple present” vs. “present continuous” like in English. That means ich mache alone has to cover “I make”, “I do”, and “I am making” — context, not verb form, tells you which one is meant.

When to use it

Formation: regular verbs

Strip the -en (or -n) off the infinitive to get the stem, then add an ending that agrees with the subject — the same idea as English quietly adding “-s” for he/she/it (I makehe makes), just carried out for every person instead of only one:

machen (to make / to do) — stem: mach-

ichmache
dumachst
er/sie/esmacht
wirmachen
ihrmacht
sie/Siemachen

Every regular verb takes this exact pattern — -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en — on its own stem. Learn it once and it works for hundreds of verbs: lernen, spielen, wohnen, kaufen…

Two spelling tweaks apply to any stem, regardless of the verb:

Stem-changing verbs

A large group of strong verbs shift their stem vowel — but only in the du and er/sie/es forms; every other person keeps the regular stem:

PatternInfinitiveduer/sie/esExample
e → isprechensprichstspricht Er spricht sehr gut Deutsch.
e → iesehensiehstsieht Siehst du das Schiff?
a → äfahrenfährstfährt Er fährt jeden Tag mit dem Bus.

There's no rule for predicting which verbs stem-change from the infinitive alone — it has to be learned per verb, the same way English's irregular verbs (go → went) just have to be memorized rather than derived.

Irregular verbs

sein, haben, and werden don’t follow the regular pattern at all and need to be memorized on their own. They’re worth the effort early: besides being extremely common on their own, all three double as auxiliary verbs for other tenses later (Perfekt, Futur, Passiv).

sein haben werden
ich bin habe werde
du bist hast wirst
er/sie/es ist hat wird
wir sind haben werden
ihr seid habt werdet
sie/Sie sind haben werden

Separable verbs

The prefix splits off and jumps to the very end of the clause:

Not every prefixed verb behaves this way, though. Verbs starting with be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver-, or zer- are always inseparable — the prefix never moves: Ich verstehe das nicht (not Ich stehe das nicht ver), Sie besucht ihre Oma.

Common mistakes

Niemiecki ma tylko jeden czas teraźniejszy — nie ma osobnego “simple present” i “present continuous” jak w angielskim. Oznacza to, że samo ich mache musi obejmować zarówno “robię”, jak i “właśnie robię” — to kontekst, a nie forma czasownika, decyduje, o co chodzi.

Kiedy go używać

Tworzenie: czasowniki regularne

Odetnij końcówkę -en (lub -n) od bezokolicznika, żeby uzyskać temat, a potem dodaj końcówkę zgodną z podmiotem — to ta sama idea, co ciche dodawanie “-s” w angielskim dla he/she/it (I makehe makes), tylko przeprowadzone dla każdej osoby, a nie tylko jednej:

machen (robić) — temat: mach-

ichmache
dumachst
er/sie/esmacht
wirmachen
ihrmacht
sie/Siemachen

Każdy czasownik regularny przyjmuje dokładnie ten sam wzorzec — -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en — na swoim temacie. Naucz się go raz, a zadziała dla setek czasowników: lernen, spielen, wohnen, kaufen…

Dwie drobne poprawki pisowni dotyczą każdego tematu, niezależnie od czasownika:

Czasowniki z wymianą tematu

Duża grupa czasowników mocnych zmienia samogłoskę tematu — ale tylko w formach du i er/sie/es; każda inna osoba zachowuje regularny temat:

WzorzecBezokolicznikduer/sie/esPrzykład
e → isprechensprichstspricht Er spricht sehr gut Deutsch.
e → iesehensiehstsieht Siehst du das Schiff?
a → äfahrenfährstfährt Er fährt jeden Tag mit dem Bus.
