Comparative & SuperlativeStopień wyższy i najwyższy
German adjectives compare in three stages — Positiv (plain), Komparativ (more/-er), Superlativ (most/-est) — and the endings are far more regular than English’s mix of “-er/-est” and “more/most”.
Regular pattern
Just add -er for the comparative, and -(e)st- for the superlative. The superlative is always used with am and an -en ending when it’s standing alone (predicative) rather than in front of a noun:
schnell → schneller → am schnellsten
einfach → einfacher → am einfachstenAdjectives whose stem already ends in -d, -t, -s, -ss, -z, or -sch add an extra -e- before -sten, purely for pronounceability:
kalt → kälter → am kältestenShort adjectives often add an umlaut
Many common one-syllable adjectives with a, o, or u pick up an umlaut in both the comparative and superlative:
alt → älter → am ältesten
gross → grösser → am grössten
jung → jünger → am jüngsten
warm → wärmer → am wärmstenIrregulars worth memorizing
A handful of very common adjectives (and one adverb) don’t follow either pattern and just have to be learned directly:

als vs. wie
Use als for an unequal comparison (“than”), and wie for an equal one (“as…as”):
Er ist grösser als ich. (He is taller than me.)
