Negation (nicht / kein)Przeczenie (nicht / kein)

German splits the job English gives to a single word (“not”) between two different words, depending on what you’re negating.

kein — negates a noun

Use kein wherever the sentence would otherwise have ein or no article at all in front of the noun:

Ich habe einen Bruder.  →  Ich habe keinen Bruder.
Ich trinke Kaffee.      →  Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.

kein declines exactly like ein — see Definite & Indefinite Articles for the full table — except it also has a plural form, keine, since you can say “no children” even though there’s no such thing as “a children”:

Wir haben keine Kinder.

nicht — negates almost everything else

Use nicht to negate a verb, an adjective, an adverb, or a noun that already has a definite article (der/die/das) or possessive:

Ich verstehe das nicht.     (verb)
Das ist nicht gut.          (adjective)
Das ist nicht mein Buch.    (definite/possessive noun phrase)

Where does nicht go?

There’s no single fixed spot, but a reliable default: nicht goes toward the end of the clause, but before whatever it’s specifically negating — an adjective, an adverb, a prepositional phrase, or (as you’ll see in the Perfekt and modal-verb pages) the second part of the verb.

Er kommt heute nicht.      (negates "kommt" — nicht goes to the very end)
Das ist nicht gut.         (negates "gut" — nicht goes right before it)

A handy contrast to keep in mind: Ich spreche kein Deutsch (I don’t speak German at all — kein, because Deutsch has no article here) versus Ich spreche das Deutsch nicht besonders gut (I don’t speak that particular German very well — nicht, because now there’s a definite article and a specific adverb being negated).

kein — zaprzecza rzeczownikowi

Użyj kein wszędzie tam, gdzie zdanie miałoby w innym wypadku ein albo żaden rodzajnik przed rzeczownikiem:

Ich habe einen Bruder.  →  Ich habe keinen Bruder.
Ich trinke Kaffee.      →  Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.

kein odmienia się dokładnie jak ein — pełną tabelę znajdziesz na stronie Rodzajniki określone i nieokreślone — z tym że ma dodatkowo formę liczby mnogiej, keine, bo można powiedzieć “żadnych dzieci”, mimo że nie istnieje coś takiego jak “jedno dziecko” w sensie rodzajnika nieokreślonego:

Wir haben keine Kinder.

nicht — zaprzecza niemal wszystkiemu innemu

Użyj nicht, żeby zaprzeczyć czasownikowi, przymiotnikowi, przysłówkowi albo rzeczownikowi, który już ma rodzajnik określony (der/die/das) albo zaimek dzierżawczy:

Ich verstehe das nicht.     (czasownik)
Das ist nicht gut.          (przymiotnik)
Das ist nicht mein Buch.    (fraza rzeczownikowa z rodzajnikiem określonym/dzierżawczym)

Gdzie stoi nicht?

Nie ma jednego stałego miejsca, ale jest niezawodna zasada domyślna: nicht idzie w stronę końca zdania, ale przed tym, czemu konkretnie zaprzecza — przymiotnikiem, przysłówkiem, frazą przyimkową albo (jak zobaczysz na stronach o Perfekcie i czasownikach modalnych) drugą częścią czasownika.

Er kommt heute nicht.      (zaprzecza "kommt" — nicht idzie na sam koniec)
Das ist nicht gut.         (zaprzecza "gut" — nicht idzie tuż przed nim)

Przydatne zestawienie do zapamiętania: Ich spreche kein Deutsch (W ogóle nie mówię po niemiecku — kein, bo Deutsch nie ma tu rodzajnika) w porównaniu z Ich spreche das Deutsch nicht besonders gut (Nie mówię szczególnie dobrze tym konkretnym niemieckim — nicht, bo teraz jest rodzajnik określony i zaprzeczany jest konkretny przysłówek).
