Temporal Clauses (als, wenn, bevor, nachdem, seit, bis, sobald)Zdania czasowe (als, wenn, bevor, nachdem, seit, bis, sobald)
German has a dedicated conjunction for almost every way one action can sit in time relative to another — and several of them (als/wenn, the nachdem-clause’s tense) trip up learners well past B1 because English doesn’t force the same distinctions.
als vs. wenn: the classic trap
Both can translate as “when”, but they aren’t interchangeable.
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | a single event or a single (even long) period, always in the past | Als ich acht Jahre alt war, sind wir nach Berlin gezogen. |
| wenn | a repeated past event ("jedes Mal, wenn...") — or any event in the present or future | Wenn es regnet, nehme ich den Bus. |
Mnemonic: als = einmal in der Vergangenheit ("once, in the past"); wenn = alles andere ("everything else" — repeated, present, or future). Even "als ich ein Kind war" fits als, because childhood only happens once — it's a single, unrepeated stretch of time, not a series of separate occasions.
nachdem and the tense-shift rule
nachdem (“after”) describes two actions where one clearly finishes before the other starts — and German marks that order grammatically: the nachdem-clause must sit one tense further back than the main clause.
| nachdem-clause | Hauptsatz | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plusquamperfekt | Präteritum / Perfekt | Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich ins Bett. |
| Perfekt | Präsens / Futur I | Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich ins Bett. |
There's no correct way to use nachdem with two clauses in the same tense — if the main clause is in the Präteritum, the nachdem-clause has to reach one step further back into the Plusquamperfekt, even though nothing about the English sentence necessarily signals that.
seit / seitdem: staying in the present
Unlike English, German describes a state that started in the past and is still true now with the present tense, marked by seit (preposition,
- Dativ) or seitdem (subordinating conjunction).
| Type | Example | |
|---|---|---|
| seit | preposition + Dativ, usually with a duration | Ich wohne seit fünf Jahren in Hamburg. |
| seitdem | subordinating conjunction, introduces a full clause | Seitdem ich hier wohne, habe ich viele neue Freunde gefunden. |
"Ich wohne seit fünf Jahren hier" — present tense, not "I have lived here" translated word for word into a German perfect tense. The action is ongoing, so the present does the job.
bis and sobald
| Connector | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bis | until — an action continues up to a boundary | Warte hier, bis ich zurückkomme. |
| sobald | as soon as — the second action follows immediately | Sobald ich Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an. |
bevor (before) and während (while, simultaneity) belong to the same family and follow the same verb-final word order — see Complex Connectors for während alongside the other B2 linking words.
sobald follows the nachdem tense-shift rule too. “Sobald er die Prüfung bestanden hatte, feierte er” needs Plusquamperfekt in the sobald-clause for the same reason a nachdem-clause does: one action clearly finished before the other began. If both actions are close together in the future, Präsens on both sides is enough — “Sobald ich Zeit habe, rufe ich dich an.”
Common mistakes
- Wenn ich acht Jahre alt war, sind wir umgezogen.Als ich acht Jahre alt war, sind wir umgezogen. — a single past event or period takes als, not wenn.
- Jedes Mal, als es regnet, nehme ich den Bus.Jedes Mal, wenn es regnet, nehme ich den Bus. — repeated events, even in the past, take wenn.
- Nachdem er ass, ging er ins Bett.Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er ins Bett. — the nachdem-clause needs to reach one tense further back (Plusquamperfekt) than the main clause.
- Ich habe seit fünf Jahren hier gewohnt.Ich wohne seit fünf Jahren hier. — an ongoing state with seit stays in the present tense in German.
nachdem i przesunięcie czasu
|---|---|---|
| seit | przyimek + Dativ, zwykle z okresem czasu | Ich wohne seit fünf Jahren in Hamburg. |
| seitdem | spójnik podrzędny, wprowadza całe zdanie | Seitdem ich hier wohne, habe ich viele neue Freunde gefunden. |
"Ich wohne seit fünf Jahren hier" — czas teraźniejszy, a nie dosłowne tłumaczenie polskiego "mieszkam tu od pięciu lat" na jakiś czas przeszły. Czynność wciąż trwa, więc wystarczy teraźniejszość.
bis i sobald
| Spójnik | Znaczenie | Przykład |
|---|---|---|
