Perfect Tense with habenCzas Perfekt z haben

The Perfekt is the tense you’ll reach for most often when speaking about the past — in conversation it does the job English uses the simple past for (“I saw”, “I read”), even though its literal build (like English’s “I have seen”) looks like a present-perfect. It’s built from two pieces:

  1. The present tense of an auxiliary verb — haben or sein — in the normal verb-second position.
  2. The Partizip II (past participle), which gets pushed all the way to the end of the clause.
Ich habe einen Film gesehen.
 ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
subj aux everything participle
             else (end of clause)

Most verbs — transitive verbs, reflexive verbs, and most verbs that don’t describe motion or a change of state — take haben. (A smaller group takes sein instead; see Perfect with sein.)

haben — present tense (the auxiliary)

ichhabe
duhast
er/sie/eshat
wirhaben
ihrhabt
sie/Siehaben

Only the auxiliary conjugates here — the participle at the end (gesehen, gelesen…) never changes form no matter who the subject is.

Forming the Partizip II

Verb typePatternExample
Regular (weak)ge- + stem + -tmachen → gemacht
Irregular (strong)ge- + stem (often changed) + -enlesen → gelesen
Verbs ending in -ierenno ge-, just -tstudieren → studiert
Separable-prefixprefix + ge- + stem + -t/-eneinkaufen → eingekauft
Inseparable-prefixno ge- at allbesuchen → besucht, verstehen → verstanden

The inseparable prefixes are be-, ver-, er-, ge-, ent-, zer-, and miss- — a verb starting with any of these simply never adds ge-, because it already "sounds like" it has a prefix in place. See the dedicated Partizip II formation page for a deeper look at these patterns — they're reused in the Plusquamperfekt and Futur II too.

Word order with other elements

Time expressions, objects, and nicht all sit in the middle field, between the auxiliary and the participle — the participle itself never moves:

Common mistakes

Tworzenie Partizip II

Typ czasownikaWzorzecPrzykład
Regularny (słaby)ge- + temat + -tmachen → gemacht
Nieregularny (mocny)ge- + temat (często zmieniony) + -enlesen → gelesen
Czasowniki na -ierenbez ge-, tylko -tstudieren → studiert
Z przedrostkiem rozdzielnymprzedrostek + ge- + temat + -t/-eneinkaufen → eingekauft
Z przedrostkiem nierozdzielnymw ogóle bez ge-besuchen → besucht, verstehen → verstanden

Przedrostki nierozdzielne to be-, ver-, er-, ge-, ent-, zer- i miss- — czasownik zaczynający się od któregokolwiek z nich po prostu nigdy nie dodaje ge-, bo już "brzmi", jakby miał przedrostek. Zobacz dedykowaną stronę Tworzenie Partizip II, żeby dokładniej przyjrzeć się tym wzorcom — są używane też w Plusquamperfekt i Futur II.

Szyk zdania z innymi elementami

Określenia czasu, dopełnienia i nicht znajdują się w polu środkowym, między czasownikiem posiłkowym a imiesłowem — sam imiesłów nigdy się nie przesuwa:
