Perfect Tense with seinCzas Perfekt z sein

A smaller set of verbs form their Perfekt with sein instead of haben, built exactly the same way — auxiliary in position two, participle at the end — just with a different auxiliary:

Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
 ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
subj aux everything participle
             else (end of clause)

These are almost all intransitive verbs (no direct object) that describe:

CategoryCommon verbsExample
Motion from A to B gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, laufen, reisen Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
A change of state aufwachen, einschlafen, wachsen, sterben, werden Er ist um acht Uhr aufgewacht.
sein and bleiben themselves sein, bleiben Ich bin die ganze Nacht wach geblieben.

A useful test: if you can ask "where to?" or "from what state to what state?" about the verb, it's very likely a sein-verb. bleiben is the classic exception that trips people up — it describes staying in place, not motion, but it still takes sein.

sein — present tense (the auxiliary)

ichbin
dubist
er/sie/esist
wirsind
ihrseid
sie/Siesind

Compare with the general Perfect with haben rules and the Partizip II formation page for how the participle itself is built — the same weak/strong/separable patterns apply regardless of which auxiliary a verb takes.

Common mistakes

Mniejsza grupa czasowników tworzy Perfekt za pomocą sein zamiast haben, w dokładnie taki sam sposób — czasownik posiłkowy na drugiej pozycji, imiesłów na końcu — tylko z innym czasownikiem posiłkowym:

Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
 ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
podm. posił. wszystko imiesłów
              inne (koniec zdania)

To niemal wyłącznie czasowniki nieprzechodnie (bez dopełnienia bliższego), które opisują:

KategoriaPopularne czasownikiPrzykład
Ruch z A do B gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, laufen, reisen Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
