Pluperfect (Plusquamperfekt)Czas zaprzeszły (Plusquamperfekt)

The Plusquamperfekt describes an action that had already happened before another point in the past — the “past of the past”. English marks this the same way, with “had” instead of “have”: I had already eaten vs. I have already eaten. German does the equivalent shift: it’s built exactly like the Perfekt, but with the auxiliary in the Präteritum instead of the present tense.

Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich spazieren.
(After I had eaten, I went for a walk.)

It follows the same haben/sein choice as the regular Perfekt — motion and change-of-state verbs take sein, everything else takes haben (see Perfect with haben and Perfect with sein if that choice isn’t automatic yet). You’ll usually see it paired with nachdem (after) or bevor (before) to make the sequence of two past events explicit — one event finishes, then the other happens.

The Plusquamperfekt auxiliary — Präteritum of haben / sein

ichhatte / war
duhattest / warst
er/sie/eshatte / war
wirhatten / waren
ihrhattet / wart
sie/Siehatten / waren

Same choice, same forms as the Präteritum of haben and sein you already know — the only thing that changes is that a participle now follows at the end of the clause.

Which clause gets which tense?

With nachdem/bevor, the earlier event goes in the Plusquamperfekt and the later one stays in the Präteritum (or Perfekt in speech):

Common mistakes

Angielski oznacza to w ten sam sposób, używając “had” zamiast “have”: I had already eaten w porównaniu z I have already eaten.
